Abstract/Summary

Recent research into healthcare-at-home has been dominated by a few large projects that have investigated the potential for technology as a way of shifting the place of healthcare interventions into the domestic environment. The basis for this assumption is questioned, leading to a more general review of recently funded research in this area. Using the databases of the UK Research Councils as a starting point, this has provided enough information to summarize current trends and topics that have been funded. These are discussed and a number of general themes are identified, including the emphasis on technology, biased perceptions of ageing, a narrow view of the role of the home, and methodological difficulties. With this in mind some suggestions are made as to how the future of research into healthcare-at-home can be pursued, something of interest to research academics and healthcare professionals alike.
