Abstract/Summary

This paper investigates how immigration affects the employment outcome of natives in Turkey. Our analysis exploits skill-cell approach at province and region levels to measure this impact. In the former, we use the variation across provinces and regions within skill groups. Using population census data for the years 1990 and 2000, we find small and statistically significant negative association between the share of immigrants and natives’ employment rate at province and regional levels. We also consider occupational and skill heterogeneity in the results. The study contributes to the immigration literature by investigating immigration into a developing country, Turkey and by considering the skill-specific impact of an immigrant supply shock.
