Abstract/Summary
This chapter provides an overview of research focusing on the status of pragmatics in EIL research and teaching, drawing particularly on the views of scholars and perceptions of language teachers. In addition to the various conceptualizations of EIL by scholars, the chapter also presents a critical discussion of whether concepts relevant to pragmatics are recognized in EIL paradigms. The implications of the reviewed research with respect to how the voices of scholars and teachers can inform pedagogical practices and how their perceptions influence EIL learners and users are also discussed in the chapter, as well as directions for future research in EIL pragmatics.
