Abstract/Summary

The ancient Greek verb ἀποδίδωμι 'give back' has an unusual usage in the Colloquia of the Hermeneumata Pseudodositheana. This paper argues that it means 'demonstrate that one has successfully completed a school assignment', that this was a technical term in the field of education, and that this meaning was transferred to ἀποδίδωμι from its Latin equivalent, 'reddo'.
