Abstract/Summary
Objective. To evaluate the implementation of a healthy living assessment (HLA) service, delivered on-campus, as an experiential learning activity for undergraduate pharmacy students. To evaluate participants’ experiences of receiving an HLA from an undergraduate pharmacy student. Methods. Pharmacy students undertook training and a competency assessment before undertaking the HLA. From 2011-2019, 896 HLAs were undertaken by 764 undergraduate pharmacy students. Pharmacy students completed quantitative and qualitative questionnaires at the end of the HLA on their perceived educational gain. Participants completed a quantitative questionnaire at the end of their HLA on the perceived quality of service they had received. Results. Undergraduate pharmacy students reported that undertaking the HLA improved their clinical knowledge, counselling skills, professionalism and confidence when talking to participants. Pharmacy students believed the HLA delivered an authentic learning experience, similar to that achieved during workplace-based placements. The HLA service was rated as good or outstanding by the participants and the majority stated that they were intending to make lifestyle changes as a result of attending the HLA. Conclusion. The HLA offers undergraduate pharmacy students a valuable, quality assured experiential learning experience. The HLAs were well received by participants, informing them of their current health status and gave them useful advice to make health improvements.
