Abstract/Summary

This book provides students with a comprehensive and accessible overview of the field of Language and Media. It covers traditional as well as emerging digital media genres and introduces a range of theoretical frameworks and analytical tools for analyzing them-- including genre analysis, sociolinguistics, critical discourse analysis, mediated discourse analysis and multimodality. It begins by acquainting readers with the ways in which mediation and its materialities affect language use, and then goes on to explore what linguistic theories can teach us about media production and reception, and the ways different media formats are structured and used. The book emphasises the increasingly creative ways ordinary people are engaging in media production. It also addresses a number of urgent current concerns around media and media production/reception including fake news, clickbait, virality and surveillance. Emphasis is placed on the different ways language and media affect students’ personal, social and political lives. The books is organized in a way that guides students from learning key concepts to applying them to their own analysis. It also includes excerpts from seminal as well as more recent works on Language and Media.
