Abstract/Summary

Drawing on contemporary and historical examples, this chapter considers design at both list and individual book level, discussing branding, cover design, and text design, to show how design presents a book to its readers. Focusing on the existence of clearly defined genres in publishing, it analyses the typical characteristics and design approaches of these genres. Technologies of printing are considered in relation to binding styles and page layout, especially the integration of text and illustrations. The chapter discusses the role of technology in transforming the designer from specifier to implementer of design decisions. It concludes by considering the advantages and disadvantages of e-books and printed books and outlining the skills required of a book designer for the future.
