Medieval meteorology: from Aristotle to the Almanac.
Cambridge University Press, Cambridge.
Abstract/Summary
This book is the first to open up the history of scientifically-based weather forecasting in Europe, from the 8th century to the 16th. The origins of the scientific theories involved are traced in both classical and Islamicate astronomy and astrology. Methods of forecasting are explained, and related to the development of scientific methodology more broadly. The book concludes by showing that the astrological method of weather forecasting persisted into the 18th century, and was for some time compatible with new astronomical ideas.
