Abstract/Summary

This is an essay on the nature and consequences for the speaking subject, and the subject matter, of Shakespeare's Sonnets which derive from adopting a speech act theory as regards the poems' assertions and other utterances. It then looks at the issues around 'uptake' in speech acts when this concept is applied to responses to poetry, and illustrates this with a look at later poetic responses to these sonnets.
