Abstract/Summary

Sustainability is now a very important concept for the construction sector and for the built environment. It not only affects the outcome of the construction process – the buildings and infrastructure that the industry produces and maintains – but also the way in which construction is done, and how construction work is procured. This chapter deals with what sustainability means and how it is typically applied in UK construction. Even within the construction domain the subject area is already vast and is also changing rapidly, and the chapter provides a brief overview of the more important concepts and approaches. Suggestions for further reading are provided.
