Abstract/Summary

From October 1944 till late 1946, the city and environs of Le Havre played host to tens of thousands of US servicemen. Some came to restore the heavily-damaged port to service; many more were GIs in transit towards the front and then, from 1945, awaiting embarkation on homeward-bound vessels. This chapter considers the tensions engendered by this massive American presence, as well as the American contribution to the reconstruction of the port.
