Abstract/Summary

This paper explores the role of workplace friendships in providing the relational context for personal engagement. It provides a review of the state of engagement theory but takes focuses on personal engagement with its explicit recognition of the role of emotions in bringing the preferred self to work. This is set in the context of workplace relationships to provide a conceptual discussion of the role that they play in engagement building on Kahn’s work examining the individual in their social role. We then illustrate our discussion with a case study drawn from recent work on the role of Human Resources. The paper finishes with discussion on development of a future research agenda in answer to recent calls for additional work on engagement.
