Abstract/Summary

This entry takes as its starting point the notion that listening in a second language is a skill that learners find difficult to acquire and teachers find difficult to teach. Against this background it considers the importance of learner strategies for listening comprehension, alongside evidence that suggests that the teaching of listening strategies can improve learners' performance of this skill. The entry concludes by outlining possible forms of instruction for listening strategies.
