Abstract/Summary
This paper defines life operationally in terms of the potential for making mistakes, which is not found in the objects of physics and chemistry. This biological normativity is an objective feature of biological reality. Mistake-making is rich for empirical investigation and hypothesis generation. The examination of mistakes enables biologists to stay close to the data while still entertaining the Big Ideas of teleology and normativity.
