Abstract/Summary
A roundtable discussion featuring movie editors Lucy Fife Donaldson, John Gibbs, Lisa Purse and Douglas Pye were joined by influential film critic, editor and blogger Girish Shambu. In the context of a themed dossier in Issue 10 of Movie: a journal of film criticism – ‘The politics of close analysis, and its object’ – and in an historical moment at which questions of marginalisation, visibility and inclusion are highly pertinent, the discussion explored the intersection of politics and the practices of film criticism. The ambition was to consider the past, present and future of film criticism through this lens, in relation to Movie: a journal of film criticism, its print predecessor Movie and other forms and practices of film criticism. Prior to the discussion two recent articles were selected as a springboard for the conversation: Racquel Gates’ ‘The Last Shall Be First: Aesthetics and Politics in Black Film and Media’ (2017) and Shambu’s ‘Manifesto: For a New Cinephilia’ (2019).
