Abstract/Summary

The focus of this chapter is on effective rural adaptation in the context of food security and agriculture in Uganda and Kenya. The chapter critically explores the boundaries of ‘adaptation’ and ‘resilience’ as policy responses to climate change in poor rural communities through the use of quantitative and qualitative methodologies, including innovative visual action research in East Africa. The chapter identifies some of the limits to building adaptive communities and explores potential solutions for enabling robust decision making for rural adaptation, that is linked to investment in sustainable (green) economic development.
