Abstract/Summary

Mould and cast often appear as separate and distinct stages of form and counter-form within a sequence of events. This might be a consequence of postproduction symbolisation, caused by attempts to fix the imprint through language, by singling out and arresting moments that are really part of flowing networks, or by an over-emphasis on resemblance and recognition. I want to formulate an alternative approach: drawing on different examples of plaster moulds and casts, I will attempt to generate and present the imprint as an occurrence in the interstice forming a third, miraculous and highly generative ground in the preset that relates to mistakes, faults, disturbances, a breakdown of accountability and recognition, and in its failure to resemble, offers instead the possibility to accumulate into sculpture.
