Holmes, G. (2019) Enhancing operational effectiveness? Pre-deployment training for tactical-level Rwandan female military peacekeepers. In: War Amongst the People: Critical Assessments. Sandhurst Trends in International Conflict Series. Howgate Publishing, Havant. ISBN 9781912440023

Abstract/Summary

In this chapter, French Sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of social practice is used to examine how UN gender mainstreaming norms (re)produced in DPKO/DFS training materials are operationalised by the Rwandan Defence Force (RDF) during the pre-deployment training for tactical-level Rwandan military peacekeepers and considers the consequences this operationalisation has for determining how female peacekeepers are equipped prior to deployment.
