Abstract/Summary

The term democracy originates from greek 'demos' (people) and kratos (power), meaning 'rule of the people'. There is often a great difference between a government's understanding of democracy and the understanding of democracy the we live in our day-to-day lives. What does democracy mean to you? Activity pack and offline participatory learning workshops. Part of BP Art Exchange, a learning project about international collaboration and exchange. Connecting schools, artists and cultural institutions worldwide through a social media platform and an offline programme of artist interventions to try and test new ideas with teachers and young people. Through the online space members could initiate or join groups discuss artwork and ideas that surfaced from the workshops, and were closely related to their own lives. The online platform was also used to post up and share opportunities through groups and messaging. Democracy and Community is fifth in a series of thematic resources created with practicing artists and published at regular intervals offering a range of playful activities and pre-formed groups. Each is intended as a starting point you can follow, select from, combine or use as inspiration to create your own responses.
