Abstract/Summary

This output focuses on the reach of the principle of effectiveness/effectiveness considerations in EU external relations law. The chapter demonstrates how effectiveness considerations employed by the CJEU have shaped the scope of other legally binding principles of EU law (eg the principle of since cooperation). The chapter claims that, as a consequence of the Court’s approach, effectiveness considerations have been relied on not only to ensure the compliance with EU law and facilitate the functioning EU legal order (as done in the context of internal matters of the EU and its Member States), but also to protect the EU’s ‘actorness’ on the international stage more broadly.
