Valle, L.H.C.N., Mitchell, R. and Dimitriadi, Y. (2016) A proposal for using cybernetics science approach to understand cognitive development of critical thinking skills in students. In: VII Congresso Mundial de Estilos de Aprendizagem, 4 - 6 Jul 2016, Bragança, Portugal.

Abstract/Summary

This paper considers how the introduction of digital technologies such as laptops and other mobile devices into schools changed the way of understanding the complexity of human critical thinking, and how it emerges as a cognitive process. In particular it investigates the extent to which technology can facilitate the development of critical thinking skills as children explore and research concepts on the web. Stemming from a 2 year study of 42 students participating in the Brazilian One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) programme the paper proposes a new cognitive model for understanding critical thinking, based on and explained by Cybernetic Science principles that are appropriate to the way in which children learn in this digital age.
