Abstract/Summary
The royal tombs in Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniae chart the parallel cultural development of Britain and Rome. Some are modelled on classical monuments, while others look back to the era of giants, creating a tension between two figures of Breton salvation : Arthur and Cadwallader. The use by the medieval authors of pilgrims' guides to the monuments of Rome is explored.
