Abstract/Summary
This chapter discusses the relative abundance of surviving records from the medieval English central government but also cautions that this may function as a form of resource curse for the unwaring historian. The volume of records obscures the sizeable gaps in coverage, most notably in terms of private and local records, and can be unwieldy to use. More fundamentally, historians can be content to passively read these sources rather than asking more searching questions about what they do not tell us and exploring more imaginative ways of using those sources.
